Navel

Navel is a 6 minutes dance commissioned for The Nobel Peace Prize Forum, which is organised by the Norwegian Nobel Institute in partnership with the University of Oslo.

The Forum brings together a unique constellation of Nobel Peace Prize laureates and other international thought-leaders; representatives of governments and international organisations; scholars; civil society leaders and activists, business and private sector actors; journalists; and youth across the globe, including students.

Serving as an arena for interdisciplinary discussion and reflection on pivotal and timely issues of importance to international peace and security, the Forum assembles 500 participants at the Oslo University Aula - an historic and iconic hall in central Oslo adorned with original paintings by expressionist painter Edvard Munch.

At 2024 Nobel Peace Prize Forum, three former Nobel Peace Prize laureates and leading experts on global nuclear politics discussed strategies to mitigate the risk of nuclear war and advance toward nuclear disarmament. We also heard powerful testimonies from Hibakusha, the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

No nuclear weapon has been used in war in nearly 80 years. But as pointed out by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, when announcing the Nobel Peace Prize 2024 to the Japanese Hibakusha organisation Nihon Hidankyo: "The nuclear powers are modernising and upgrading their arsenals; new countries appear to be preparing to acquire nuclear weapons. Threats are being made to use nuclear weapons in ongoing warfare. At this moment in human history, it is worth reminding ourselves what nuclear weapons are the most destructive weapons the world has ever seen".
Navel is an original choreography with live music, created for the Nobel Peace Prize Forum as a ripple from the Hibakusha's testimonies. Each movement reverberates, offering a quiet gesture toward a hopeful future.
